1 Peter 2:13-17 (MSG)
13-17Make the Master proud of you by being good citizens. Respect the authorities, whatever their level; they are God’s emissaries for keeping order. It is God’s will that by doing good, you might cure the ignorance of the fools who think you’re a danger to society. Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules. Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.
Respect your authorities as this says. I guess people like to overlook this verse, because they pledge their allegiance to what they think is better for our country. I’m not being political, and no I don’t know who I’ll vote for in November. If you really respect President Obama, then you’ll actually pray for him, you won’t disagree with every piece of legislation he pushes, you won’t talk poorly about him, and surely you won’t say things like, “I’ve been waiting for this next election since the moment Obama took office”. That’s not respect.
Respect is saying we are behind you, because you are our leader. We may not agree on everything, but we support you, because you represent our nation to the world. I’m not saying you should vote for him or agree with him, but you should support him. And do not say, “I respect the government, but…” Respect does not come with butts. Respect is an attitude of honor, and if we really are God fearing people, then we better truly honor and respect whomsoever holds the office of the President of the United States of America.
